THE SOAPBOX

Stand up. Speak up. It’s your turn.

Remember in 2018 when a Chinese company bought the old Daniel Webster College? It seems as though the Chinese have a particular interest in Nashua. In January, a Chinese-backed company purchased a 337,000 square foot water bottling facility.

This appears to be the first foray of the Chinese into American water. That is alarming. We know that in recent years, China has been purchasing American businesses as a breakneck pace, from movie theater and radio stations, to farmland near military installations.

Given the fact that Chinese businesses are subservient to the government, this transaction must be viewed through a national security lens. If we allow the Chinese access to our domestic water supply, what does that mean in times of crisis?

There has been very little in the news about this issue, but I am hopeful that our local leaders will stand up and start asking questions. We cannot allow the Chinese to have access to a vital resource.

Randall Whitehead resides in Nashua and is a former NH State Representative.
