NASHUA, NH – Due to the hard work and dedication of the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter (NKSK), many Nashua families have just a bit more to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.  This week they distributed hundreds of complete turkey dinner boxes.  Each “box” was the complete set of ingredients for a traditional turkey dinner that can be prepared at home.

Carol Weeks, Director of Community Relations estimates that they will have handed 800 to 1,000 family meals before the week ends. This is a major production involving the NKSK staff, dozens of volunteers, lots of logistics, planning, hard work, and truckloads of food.

“Next to the school book bag program, this is one of our biggest projects for the year, “ said Weeks.

NASHUA, NH – U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan spent some of Tuesday handing out turkeys and greeting clients, staff, and the team of volunteers. She has done this for many years and she considers it “a holiday tradition.”

Reflecting on the holiday she said, “It’s my family’s favorite holiday because all it is about is focusing on your blessings. It’s my favorite holiday too because I get to see people in New Hampshire helping each other in all sorts of ways, big and small. And so everything from what the Nashua Soup Kitchen does to what they’ll do serving Thanksgiving dinner at Harbor Homes today just reflects that New Hampshire, we’re friends and neighbors and we take care of each other.”

This year Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter’s Carol Weeks says they are experiencing an increase in demand for services across the board and for this year’s Thanksgiving Box program.  She expressed gratitude for the donors and volunteers who make it possible to provide for the community.

One of the best results of the dinner box program is that attendance at the shelter for meals on Thursday will drop off considerably from normal levels. “Many of our regular clients will be sitting at a family table rather than be here because of the meals we sent out this week,” said Weeks.
