NASHUA, NH – Nashua nonprofit, The Thank You Project is hosting its ninth annual Water Walk at Greeley Park on Saturday, September 14, beginning at 9 a.m.

The group’s mission is to bring clean, reliable water sources to communities in rural Nigeria.  The walk is a fundraising event to generate funds to drill and build wells in these communities. The 2023 Water Walk raised more than $7,000 and funded wells in the towns of Achi and Uttu.

You can watch the video of the 2023 Walk below, to get an idea of how it works.

Access to clean water is a major health and development issue for rural Africa.  Women and girls in developing nations walk an average of 6 kilometers (about 3.5 miles) each day to collect 20 liters of water weighing about 42 pounds for their daily needs. Sanitation issues contribute to high rates of illness and death due to water-borne pathogens. Households commonly spend 15 hours a week collecting water.

The Water Walk is a way to raise funds and more importantly, awareness of the challenges faced in rural Nigeria.  Participants in the walk will walk from Greeley Park with empty five-gallon buckets to the Nashua River on Franklin Street. They will fill the buckets and return to Greeley after completing the 2-mile walk.
