Symphony New Hampshire Opens the 2024-25 Season with Mahler.

On Sunday, October 27 at 4pm, Maestro Roger Kalia brings soprano Carley DeFranco to the Nashua Center of the Arts for a journey through Gustav Mahler’s delightful vision of heaven with his Fourth Symphony paired with Samuel Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915, a boy’s poetic description of heaven at his childhood home.  Tickets start at $32 and are available at the Nashua  Center for the Arts (https://nashuacenterforthearts.com/ (800) 657-8774/ 201 Main St.  Nashua, NH 03060)

Soprano Carley DeFranco returns to the stage with SNH to perform the final movement in Mahler’s Fourth ‘The Heavenly Life’ and Barber’s Summer of 1915. Ms. DeFranco’s “sunny” and “soaring” voice can be heard regularly with the Boston Lyric Opera, True Concord Voices & Orchestra, and Boston Baroque. Along with private vocal lessons, Ms. DeFranco is the Director of After School Music at Dexter Southfield and a Voice Instructor in Harvard University’s Holden Voice Program.

Maestro Kalia says, “Carley is an exceptional performer, and we are lucky that such an amazing talent is in our area.” DeFranco most recently performed with SNH in March 2023 for Mozart’s Requiem as a part of the Symphony’s 100th anniversary. Kalia continued, “It is always a special treasure when you get to work with such an extremely talented artist who is also a genuine and wonderful person.”

Gustav Mahler
Symphony No. 4 in G Major
was composed in 1899-1900 after a long period of writer’s block. The fourth movement titled ‘The Heavenly Life’ was written in 1892, originally intended for the finale of the Third Symphony.   Arguably one of his more accessible pieces of work, Mahler’s  Fourth Symphony clocks in at under one hour, it is replete with airy and colorful reoccurring themes, and it finishes in the fourth movement with the delicate voice of a boy fantasizing about what heaven will be like.

Samuel Barber
Knoxville: Summer of 1915 (Op. 24)
was composed in 1947 based on a passage from James Agee’s 1938 autobiographical prose poem of the same name. Agee was six years old in 1915 and the portrayal in this passage is just one year before his father’s death by a car accident. This was the child’s heaven – before he knew there was such pain and tragedy.
