NASHUA, NH – The Planning and Economic Development, and Personnel/Administration Affairs Committees approved the “Livable Nashua” Sustainability and Resilience Plan, which was presented by sustainability manager Deb Chisholm on Monday, April 8.

“… At the very beginning of this program … we were talking about greenhouse gas emissions – that’s kind of the one that everybody think of when they think about sustainability – but the other things that were also important to us when trying to develop what our goals really were, were social equity; community environmental, social and economic resilience; stewardship of natural social and financial resources,” Chisholm said.

The plan includes short-term action plans that will help meet the goals of the Imagine Nashua Plan and meet the challenges of climate change, hopefully within the next five years.

It is broken up into five focus areas: clean energy and efficient buildings; resilient and healthy community; smart waste and water management; sustainable transportation and land use; and thriving natural resources.

This includes conservation, attainable and resilient housing, municipal water and energy use, making the community more walkable and implementing bike lanes, and transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy.

“The idea here is that the faster and more aggressively the city and basically all community members can take action, the better that we can help slow climate change to a manageable pace that will actually allow us to [better] adapt to changes,” Chisholm said.

The plan will be announced at the second annual Sustainability Fair on Saturday, April 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Nashua Public Library. The event will include an electric vehicle showcase, more than 20 nonprofits, free seeds from the library’s Seed Garden and more.
