
NASHUA, NH – As the winter sports season creeps forward, and January turns to February, teams and athletes from the Gate City are beginning to come into form, and the race to the postseason begins to tighten. Here’s a look at some of the action from the last week:

Girls basketball
Nashua North
Four days after going on the road and defeating Trinity, 58-48, the Titans returned home and, competing against a Portsmouth team that outsized them at most every position, gutted out a 39-32 victory on Tuesday, Jan. 28.
Aidan Walker led the way with 14 points, eight defensive rebounds and four steals, while Lily Small shut down Portsmouth’s leading scorer, holding her to no field goals, and Angie King controlled the flow of offense with her ball handling and passing, according to North head coach Curt Dutilley.

Indoor track & field

Nashua South and Bishop Guertin each competed at the University of New Hampshire in Durham on Sunday, Jan. 26 in the afternoon session.
Among several standout performances for South, Raymond Karuru was best among shot putters with a mark of 46 feet, 3.75 inches; Ryan DuVarney topped the boys 1500-meter run at 4 minutes, 18.28 seconds; Matthew Motherway won the boys 1000 meters at 2 minutes, 49.54 seconds and the boys 4×160-meter relay team of Leonel Lopez, Ryan Jansen, Tim Staveley and Marcell Perry won with a time of 1 minute, 14.75 seconds.
For the South girls, freshman Natalee Thomas won the 55-meter final in 7.64 seconds.

Swimming
The boys and girls split this year’s Battle of the Bridge. The North boys topped South, while the girls reversed the outcome.
The North boys started out the meet with multiple wins. The 200 medley team of Tom White, Griffin Reilly, Jayden Ceballos, and Jack White took the top spot. The success continued with a first place finish for Tom White in the 200 Free and a 1st and second place finish for Jack White and Jayden Ceballos in the 200 IM. Griffin Reilly rounded out North’s hot start with a win in the 50 Free. North’s duo for diving continued their success with a 1st and 2nd place finish for Dawson Bolton and David Preston. Other first place finishes went to Tom White in the 100 Breaststroke, Jack White in the 100 Free, and the team of David Preston, Luke Frenette, Alexander Paquin, and Jack White took first in the 400 free relay.
On the girl’s side, Maddie Grigas-Lewis took first place in the 100 Breaststroke. Whle Kaylee Hall and Savanna Basford took 2nd and 3rd in the 1-meter dive. Gabbi Desjardins, Claire Hilderbrand and Emerly Chacon each had PRs in the meet, and Laura White rounded out the scores for the Titans with two 2nd place finishes in the 200 and 100 Freestyle.
Gymnastics
Competing Friday, Jan. 24 against Keene High School at the Keene Family YMCA, the Nashua South and North gymnastics teams provided several standout performances.
Nashua South
South, missing three of eight team members due to dual-sport commitments, still had two gymnasts senior Katie Perry and junior Binita Rana, compete in the all-around.
Perry having her fourth all-around performance of the season, scored a season high on beam, and Rana, in her second all-around competition of the season, received season-high scores on bars and floor and tied for her season high on beam.
Junior Abbey Herbert had solid and consistent performances on vault and bars, said her coach, Nichole Hembrow, who added that sophomore Sophie Collins had her best meet of the season, receiving her season-high score on floor while debuting her front handspring vault.
Freshman Maddie LaFleur also continued to improve and received her best score of the season on beam.
“We may not have had our full team for this meet, but we made the best of it and I am encouraged by the multiple improvements made and some new season high scores,” said Hembrow.
Nashua North
Sophomore, Ashlynn Hall competed in three events, received her second highest floor score of the season and had her best score of the season on beam. She also competed on vault, while junior Lynnlee Davis continued to perform with improved skills in her routines on balance beam and floor, the latter in which she received her highest score of the season.
North and South next compete at Londonderry on Wednesday, Feb. 5, the teams’ final meet before the state championships.
