Festival of Light: India Association of NH celebrates Diwali in Nashua

NASHUA, NH – The India Association of New Hampshire (IANH) hosted its grand Diwali and Navratri festival on Sunday at Nashua High South.  Hundreds of local South Asians gathered to celebrate their culture, food, and community.

Diwali is also called the Festival of Light.  It is a religious holiday celebrated annually in the Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, and Buddhist faiths. The ritual celebrates an individual’s inner light over spiritual darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Over a billion people around the world celebrate Diwali, also known as Deepavali.

The event included musical and dance performances, a fashion show, and a bazaar, which featured South Asian products, jewelry, and clothing. The Desi Chowrastha Restaurant in Nashua served traditional Indian food in the cafeteria.

The IANH also took the opportunity to offer felicitation to two newly-elected state Representatives from the community who will be representing Nashua. IANH Life Member State Representative Manoj Chourasia (Hillsborough 11) and State Representative Santosh Salvi  (Hillsborough 9) will be sworn into office in January.

The IANH’s purpose is to foster the well-being of the Indian Community, to present cultural and educational programs, and to do community and charitable services.
