Harbor Care announced Wednesday the receipt of a $30,000 grant from the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation. This grant will support Harbor Care in advancing its mission-critical work to end homelessness and improve health outcomes by enhancing technology systems, expanding outreach and engagement efforts, and strengthening partnerships to better serve New Hampshire’s most vulnerable individuals and families.

“I lost everything when that happened because I stayed with my child in the hospital for 16 days so I lost my job, I lost where I was living,” Hannan-Vitale said. “I had nothing in Maine for myself anymore, so the only person I had left honestly was my other kids’ dad and he lived in New Hampshire, so I came down here.”

According to Alderman Moran, changes need to be made to keep people who are at imminent risk of homelessness from becoming unhoused. He says this includes supporting initiatives that are building low income housing – such as NeighborWorks – expansion of low-income housing, and practical changes to zoning to allow for duplexes rather than single-family homes, which he says will help drive down the cost of rent.

The median cost for a two-bedroom apartment in New Hampshire is about $1,584. To afford it, someone would have to earn about $31 an hour. YHDP is a two-year grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to end youth and young adult homelessness. Once a request for proposals is released, local agencies will be able to submit proposals for projects that in some way focus on housing for youth between the ages of 18 and 25.
