As elected aldermen, we’ve had the privilege of serving Nashua through both its triumphs and its challenges. Recently, our city has hit a rough patch that has left many residents frustrated and searching for answers. From surprise property revaluations to school busing issues and the abrupt closure of Stellos Stadium, it’s been challenging. As leaders, we need to address these concerns and take ownership where necessary, and ensure better communication and accountability.

“We never had an official communication to the board that this was going on,” Alderman Gouveia said. “I feel we could have just done better educating the public and we could have done better easing everybody on what the long-term plan was here.I just feel there was a big lack of communication and that hurt for a lot of people.”

According to the school district’s athletic director Lisa Gingras, the decision to close was a collaborative decision between herself, the superintendent of Parks and Recreation, and the athletic director at Bishop Guertin. After noticing that the field was deteriorating, they had an inspector from Firefly Sports Testing inspect the field last week.

If approved, the resolution would exempt the total debt service principal and interest payment of municipal bonds appropriated in the Fiscal Year 2025 budget. This would increase the available budget under the cap so that approximately $33 million worth of projects could be appropriated.

Members of the community have been asking the board to pass a ceasefire resolution for the war in Palestine since February. Now, five months later, Ward 4 Alderman Tom Lopez has proposed a resolution to address their concerns.

During a public hearing on April 22, Alderman Moran – the prime sponsor of the legislation – said the purpose of adding a social worker and registered nurse to the Board of Health was to make it multidisciplinary, as there are some of the issues the board deals with concern social determinants of health, which he said would be “more in the wheelhouse” of  social workers and nurses.

“As the ward 9 alderman walking around, if someone asks me ‘hey, how come since 2018 [to 2023] the Nashua School District budget has increased 21.43 percent and student population has decreased 10.45 percent,’ how do I answer that?” Alderman John Sullivan asked at the budget review committee meeting on Tuesday night.
