NASHUA, NH – The grinding, chipping, and polishing are almost over, and the four artists are ready to put down their tools. No more ringing of hammers striking chisels, grinders sinking into stone, or clouds of dust. The 18th annual Nashua International Sculpture Symposium is almost over. All that is left to do are the final touches and installing the latest sculptures around Nashua.
This year’s symposium theme was “IN THE MAKING” and, for the first time, features an all-female group of international artists. They are Valerie Funk of Germany, Danaë LeBlond-Joris of France, Yunmi Lee of South Korea, and Italy, and Casey Schachner of the United States.
For the past three weeks, the sculptors worked to create large-scale works of art that will be added to the collection already produced in past years and displayed across the city. Each artist this year is carving natural stone that has been quarried in New England.
A closing ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 31 at 1 p.m. beginning at the Picker Artists Studios, 3 Pine St., Nashua. After closing comments, a tour of the four sculpture installation sites around town will be conducted. The public is invited to join the caravan as it makes its way to each site where the artist will give a brief talk about their art.
