PUBLISHER'S CORNER

My primary care nurse practitioner says I gotta drop some pounds and take better care of myself. She recommended I get up an hour earlier than usual so I can do some aerobics.

So yesterday I did that.

I found a 12-minute aerobic video for seniors on YouTube and I watched all 12 minutes while I sipped my coffee.

Then, I tried it - but to be honest, I went into it feeling a little insulted. "This is going to be too easy," I thought. "She didn't break a sweat."

I've done pilates and and jazzercise. I owned copies of abs and buns of steel. I was the fastest girl in my gym class to run the track during Presidential Fitness Awards season, and I won a hot-pepper jump rope contest at Karen Schaeffer's 10th birthday party.

I'm here to tell you that the old adage "use it or lose it" is the truth. I was never so happy when the video shifted into "cool down" after 10 grueling minutes of "step-touch" footwork and marginal squats.

But then I remembered the other old adage, "a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step-touch," and so here's to doctor's orders and the journey back to my old self.
