PUBLISHER'S CORNER

By the time you read this I'll be somewhere between the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport and Chicago. I'm going to a conference to be with other news publishers in different stages of insanity.
Some are just starting out and are delighting in creative ways to put AI bots to work, to take care of tasks that can be done without humanity. I am not judging them. Maybe they're on to something. I will keep an open mind.
But I expect I will be drawn to the others, like me, still experiencing flashbacks of the feel of warm newsprint as it absorbs ink that is hot off the press for a first look at our bylines on a front-page story that took weeks to investigate and report on.
It seems so long ago and far away that what we did as journalists carried weight and felt valued - a time when people supported news through subscriptions, and businesses supported it through advertising because it was how you stayed connected.
As I look for the future of local news publishing in Chicago and mingle with others like me (and some who are not so much like me) I'm hoping to gather ideas for ways to keep doing what I'm doing. Yes, it's more than a little bit insane to devote oneself to local news in a world of Facebook and TikTok and Instagram and deep-fakes and clicks and likes.
Yes, it does feel crazy to believe that if I try really hard I can rally a community to come together to seek solutions to problems that are solvable, and think positively about this place where they live - steeped in history and as full of promise as ever.
Call me crazy, but I'm off to Chicago because I believe what we're doing matters and I believe you do, too.

"I think of the Library of Things as one more way that the library is helping community members reach their personal goals in an affordable and sustainable way," said Library Director Jennifer McCormack. "Customers can "try before they buy" or borrow items they might only need for special occasions, like our LED projector or puppet theater," said McCormack.
