Anmol Karen, left, and Shaurya Jain: They love animals, their relatives and technology.
I love a good teenagers-solving-the-worlds-problems story. This one, especially, because it comes from the heart.

Shaurya Jain and Anmol Karan who attend Thomas Jefferson High School in Virginia received $15,000 for a prototype that they believe will reduce the number of deer vs vehicle collisions, which as we all know can be costly if not deadly to both animals and humans.

Here in NH the Fish & Game Department says there are about 1,200 such collisions annually - and that's not counting man vs moose crashes, which adds another 75 accidents each year on average.

That's nothing, though, compared to Virginia, where in 2022, 6,100 traffic collisions, or 15% of the total number in the state, involved deer.

The idea these young men have is an Artificial Intelligence system that uses sensors to detect both cars and deer in the vicinity, emitting high-frequency pulses and animal sounds to deter the deer from attempting to cross at that moment. If positioned in places with high deer traffic, the boys hope it will stop them from impacting traffic, especially at night when visibility is low and deer are most active.

Shuarya said he was inspired by his religion: Jainism—which holds all animals to be sacred and carriers of souls, while Anmol said he was moved to action by the news that his uncle had collided with a deer in his car at night and was badly injured.

I hope they succeed.

'We need to find ways to provide housing in other forms that better align with the city’s long-term goals – and also produce school children.'

“I want the theme here to be that housing, while it's being created, is likely to be in a form that does not generate school children,” community development director Matt Sullivan said at a special Board of Education meeting Wednesday night at the new McCarthy Middle School.
