I have no idea if public schools do singing any more. Or I guess what I mean is chorus. All my life as a kid there were opportunities for group singing. I always was in "the chorus," and not only that. We also had a principal at my elementary school who played piano, so he was fond of calling assemblies in the All Purpose Room and we'd all sing-along to songs like "The Happy Wanderer," and B-I-N-G-O.
|
In middle school I remained faithful to chorus and any opportunity to sing, and once in high school I did chorus and theatre until other endeavors distracted me from the joy I got from singing. I also was in the church choir from the time I could fit into the youth choir robes right up through high school. I was an alto but I loved singing in harmony with others. And while I'm out of the public school loop, I am glad to know that our community offers such opportunities - the Nashua Choral Society is holding a Summer Sings series - and anyone can feel free to join in. There are some things you need to know - there's a nominal $15 fee to participate, and if you happen to have your own music, bring it.
|
You can also just go and spectate. The first sing-along is tonight, 7 p.m. at Resurrection Church on Broad Street. I'm sure the vocal skills needed to sing along are far beyond my B-I-N-G-O days, but if you once were a joyful singer, you might want to check it out - and connect with the choral society.

New Hampshire Republicans this year have what’s become a rare opportunity: an open race in the state’s 2nd Congressional District. Democrat Annie Kuster has held the seat, which covers the western half of the state and the North Country, for more than a decade. But her retirement — and uncertainty about the political strength of President Joe Biden — has a range of GOP hopefuls liking their chances this year.

You’ll be pleased to learn that New Hampshire’s legislators have been showing up to cast their votes in record numbers, lately. The 2024 attendance data shows legislators’ average voting attendance in the NH House remained at a record-high 93%, the same number as last year.

The purpose of this series is to highlight local nonprofits, especially those who would benefit from a bump in visibility. So it might seem curious to select an organization with ubiquitous name recognition like Meals on Wheels of Hillsborough County. Most people have at least a nominal idea of the services Meals on Wheels provides — delivering meals to people who, for one reason or another, cannot easily get to a grocery store. But that is merely the tip of the iceberg of the organization’s services.

It sounds like a scorcher! Make sure to stay hydrated and find some shade when you can. Thunderstorms late this afternoon can be quite dramatic, especially with the potential for flash flooding and strong winds. With temperatures feeling like 99, staying hydrated and cool is also crucial. Stay safe!
